Foton barges into Pool C with 3-0 slate after sweep of Cocolife

The Foton Tornadoes will show off a perfect record heading into the next round after a sweep of the Cocolife Asset Managers, 26-24, 25-20, 25-17, Tuesday evening at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Foton will advance to Group C together with Petron and Cignal. Cocolife, on the other hand, will settle for a 1-2 record, moving to Pool D.

Team Captain Santiago was the top scorer with 16 points, followed by Laure with 12 points, six digs, and three receptions.

Even though it was a sweep, the Cocolife Asset Managers did not let go without a fight.

In the first set, just when Foton were about to easily pick up the first at 24-20, their errors and Cocolife’s Angelica Cayuna’s attacks carried a four-to-nothing run, extending the set to a deuce. However, Laure did not allow Cocolife to steal the set, and finished it at 26-24.

The see-saw tempo of the game continued in the next set, wherein more scorers of Cocolife chipped in. Team Captain Michele Gumabao listed 11 markers, while Joanne Bunag and Jeushl Tiu contributed 9 and 7 crucial points respectively. Despite their attacks, errors stunted their momentum. Jaja Santiago and EJ Laure took advantage.

Come the third set, Foton limited the Cocolife to only 17 points, due to Foton’s solid defense and Roselyn Doria’s three blocks. The Tornadoes finished the set and the match, 25-17.
