With expectations soaring, Randy Schneider aims to deliver for PMNFT

Amid high anticipation, midfielder Randy Schneider gave Philippine Men’s National Football Team fans a glimpse of his potential, scoring a brilliant solo goal in the Philippines’ 4-1 victory over Maldives last Tuesday at the New Clark City Stadium.

Receiving a pass from Sandro Reyes, the 23-year-old Swiss-Filipino cut inside and struck the ball into the back of the net with his right foot, restoring the home side’s two-goal cushion.

His stellar performance earned him the Man of the Match honors.

“I think we had more quality,” Schneider said. “We had to win this game. Every game starts 0-0. This was the first step to the Asian Cup 2027.

“I think I’m very proud of this start. I had to help the team like this. I’ve had great things ever since I came to the Philippines. Coach (Albert Capellas), the staff, and my motherland gave me a very good feeling, and I’m really, really happy.”

Growing up in Switzerland, the 5-foot-7 midfielder developed his skills in three different youth teams before making his way to the senior squad of Grasshopper Club Zürich. He later moved to FC Aarau, initially on loan before securing a permanent transfer, where he made 53 appearances and scored nine goals.

Currently, he plays professionally for FC Winterthur, signing a three-year contract in 2023.

Despite his club commitments, Schneider previously represented Switzerland at the youth level. Now, as a senior international for the Philippines, the transition has allowed him to reconnect with his Filipino roots — particularly with his mother’s side, who live in Metro Manila.

“My relatives live in Mandaluyong,” he shared. “I was here in December. I tried to visit them as much as possible. I’m very happy they came today and saw our first win.”

For his part, head coach Albert Capellas felt impressed with Schneider’s impact on the squad. The Spanish tactician believes that adding more players like him will strengthen the national team’s chances of qualifying for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

“As a national team, we have to grow in all aspects: inside of the organization, the facilities, the way of playing, the way of training, and the way that we collaborate,” said Capellas. “My job and the job of the federation is to try and find the best players with Filipino blood, players who really want to stay here. I will say thank you because we talked several times.

“With Randy, I visited him and he was always open to coming. We were waiting for the right moment. He decided that the right moment is now. I’m very happy that he can be part of the Philippine national team family.”

With his national team debut behind him, Schneider is eager to build on his momentum. The PMNFT’s next challenge will be a crucial home match against Tajikistan in June, where another victory is vital — only the top team in Group A will secure a spot in the tournament in Saudi Arabia.

As enjoyable as the win against Maldives was, bigger tests lie ahead.

“I would say, since the first day, I got so many messages that it’s good news that I’m here,” Schneider said. “The expectations are high now. Hopefully, we can go like this in the next game.”
