Vergel Meneses leaves JRU after 9 years: ‘I want to serve my hometown this time’

After nine years, the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers will no longer have a familiar face on the sidelines calling the shots.

Vergel Meneses has left his alma mater, choosing to focus all his efforts to his constituents in Bulacan.

The development was first reported by Norman Riego of ABS-CBN Sports.

“Yes. I’m moving on to a new arena,” shared Meneses, who is running for mayor.

“I want to serve my hometown this time.”

In his nine-year stay in JRU, Meneses steered the Heavy Bombers to five Final Four appearances. He accumulated a record of 84-76 in the elimination round, 2-7 in the playoffs. The Heavy Bombers failed to make the finals during his stay.

“I believe I have served my alma mater for the past nine years and it’s high time to go back to my roots,” he furthered.

Late last year, Meneses filed his certificate of candidacy to the Commission on Elections to run for office. And he has already informed the school about his decision.

“I have informed JRU regarding my plans before I submitted my CoC. They are behind me in this endeavor.”

Handling the team right now is Meneses’ lead assistant coach Vic Lazaro.
