The 2023 V-League Collegiate Challenge on Sunday evening witnessed a night of upsets, and among the two games played, Enderun Colleges orchestrated the more significant surprise.
The defending NAASCU champion executed a reverse sweep against San Sebastian College-Recoletos with scores of 21-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-12 at the Paco Arena in Manila.
Erika Deloria showcased her skills for the Lady Titans, amassing 17 points throughout the two-hour-long match, with 16 of her spikes finding their mark during critical junctures, effectively thwarting the efforts of the Lady Stags.
Head coach Dong Dela Cruz of Enderun remarked, “Nakita namin na kaya naman nila kasi first two sets leading na kami, hinabol lang nila. Sabi ko lang sa kanila, ipakita niyo lang kung sino kayo.”
Althea Botor displayed her prowess on the left side, contributing a game-high 21 points, while Zen Peronilo added 12 points to ensure the downfall of San Sebastian.
For the Lady Stags, Tina Marasigan and Kat Santos took charge, delivering 19 and 18 points, respectively. Marasigan garnered all her points through attacks, while Santos not only recorded 16 spikes but also contributed two aces.
Earlier, Mapua University also surprised NCAA finalist Lyceum of the Philippines University, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11.
Coach Aying Estaban commented on the Mapua win after two hours and 19 minutes, saying, “Naging tight yung game namin against LPU. Dito kasi sa V-League, may cino-construct kami na bagong system, kaya minsan lost yung players. Pero a win is a win.”
Nicole Ong finished the game with 12 points, achieved through eight spikes, three kill blocks, and a service ace.
On the other hand, Raisa Ricablanca rejuvenated Mapua’s momentum, especially during the fifth set, ultimately securing 17 points, with 15 stemming from successful attacks.
Despite Johna Dolorito’s impressive 23-point performance for the Lady Pirates, the Lady Cardinals managed to outshine them.
Janeth Tulang added 18 points for LPU.
