V-League: Ateneo bucks San Beda challenge, sets up semis clash vs UP


Ateneo de Manila University bucked shaky stretches throughout the match to book its place in the semifinals of the 2022 V-League Collegiate Challenge at the expense of San Beda University, 25-13, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22, Friday evening at the Paco Arena Sports and Events Center in Manila.

The Blue Eagles set a semifinals showdown with fellow UAAP squad University of the Philippines, while the Lady Red Spikers drew Far Eastern University in the classification matches.

Back-to-back hits from Lyann De Guzman pulled Ateneo to four match points, before a booming kill from the middle from AC Miner closed the one-hour 46-minute match.

“We won; (San Beda) played their best game. We maximized what we got, marami kasi kong may injuries. Good thing na napa-practice namin mga players namin,” Ateneo head coach Oliver Almadro said. “San Beda gave a good fight, so a win is a win.”

Libero Roma Mae Doromal manned the defense well for the Blue Eagles with 14 digs and 12 excellent receptions, while it was Vanie Gandler paced the offense with 14 points, all coming from attacks.

Chynna Castillo was solid for San Beda with 10 markers, all from spikes. Angel Habacon also had 10 kills in the match.
