UST Tiger Jins beats NU in battle of contenders

UST and Philippine team head coach Dindo Simpao heading into the season had nothing in mind but the championship. They wiped-out the taekwondo circuit during the preseason; including winning the gold during the Taekwondo Nationals. The Tiger Jins 5-2 win over the NU Jins was a statement win the team.

Previously winless UST finweight Rryel Ramirez finally secured a win for himself with an 11-8 win over Alfred Avila. The match was just a prelude of the things to come for the NU Bulldogs. Rhayzor Catris took a huge 14-3 lead against Diether Baylon in the opening round before hitting a well-timed head kick during the start of the 2nd round in winning the match 17-3 by point gap stoppage. Philippine team member Paul Romero continued the wave with a 10-6 win over Jefferson Piopongco. Momentum for the UST-side would momentarily stop when Aljon Ortonio defeated last year’s UAAP Featherweight Gold medalist Joaquin Mendoza 12-7 but Juan Miguel Ramos took back the momentum with a 6-3 win over Dave Cea. Arven Alcantara blasted rookie Aries Capispisan right from the get go en route to a 20-10 win. Cedrick Perez would outwork late-replacement Erickson Silvestre 5-1 to cap the UST dominance.
