UST Jins secure Taekwondo championship with win over DLSU

The highly anticipated series between the uber-deep line-ups of DLSU and UST was the 2nd match of the final day of the tournament. Two coaches from the national team, DLSU’s Coach Roberto Cruz and UST’s Coach Dindo Simpao, squared-off in the pivotal match. A DLSU win here would tie them at 1st with UST while UST win guarantees them the championship by virtue of tiebreakers.

Paolo Jazmines, after a slow 1st round that had him and Rryel Ramirez have a 1-all score, blasted Ramirez with an array of body and head kicks to score 10 points in an 11-4 win. Rhayzor Catris scored an upset win over last year’s MVP Kevin Sia 5-2 to tie the series 1-all. Philippine team stand-out Paul Romero stayed perfect in the tournament, dominating Josafat Licayan 11-4. Last season’s UAAP featherweight gold medalist Joaquin Mendoza edged out Kyle Uy in sudden death to give UST a comfortable 3-1 lead. The top two lightweights from last season faced-off in the pivotal 5th match with DLSU’s life on the line. Same as last season, it was still Keith Sembrano topping last season’s rookie of the year, Juan Miguel Ramos, 5-3 to give DLSU a chance to upset the still unbeaten UST team. However, it was leading rookie of the year candidate Aries Capispisan sealing the deal for the UST squad with a close 7-6 win in the welterweight match against Gerry del Rosario. Again, Philippine team member Kristoffer Uy, visibly frustrated, let out his frustration on the court with a pounding on Isiah Lorbez. Uy dispatched Lorbez in less than 30 seconds of mat time with 4 straight head kicks.

With the win the University of Santo Tomas avenge last year’s 2nd place finish. The small UST contingent celebrated the win but Coach Jasmine and Coach Dindo still have work to be done. Their focus was to win both men’s and women’s divisions and up next was the pivotal match-up of the UST Lady Jins against the FEU Lady Tamaraws.
