UST, Ateneo pick up opening day wins

Defending Beach Volleyball kings Kris Roy Guzman and Anthony Arbasto of the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers opened their title defense with a squeaker, outlasting the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons duo of Nicolo Consuelo and Wendel Miguel in three sets, 12-21, 21-15, 17-15, Thursday evening at the SM Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.

Guzman and Arbasto’s win highlighted a four-game slate in the UAAP Season 80 Men’s Beach Volleyball tournament that saw the Ateneo Blue Eagles, National University Bulldogs, and DLSU Green Spikers come out with wins as well.

NU’s Bryan Bagunas, who is still recovering from spasms, and James Natividad battled back from a set down to take down last season’s silver medalists FEU, 21-23, 21-19, 15-12.

Ateneo’s Marck Espejo and Karl Baysa, on the other hand, were dominant against UE’s Alven Aljas and Clifford Inofeno, taking a quick 21-13, 21-12 win.

The closes match-up of the day however belonged to La Salle and Adamson.

Green Spikers Carlo Sendo and Wayne Marco figured in a nip and tuck affair against Paolo Pablico and John Yude as all three sets could have gone either way. Still, La Salle was able to outlast Adamson, 24-26, 21-18, 15-13.
