Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) showed its dominance in the 9th UNTV Cup with a commanding 93-66 win over National Housing Authority (NHA) on Sunday at the Novadeci Convention Center in Quezon City.
The Cavaliers relied on their fierce defense in the final quarter to hold the Home Masters to just nine points, tying with the Judiciary Magis for the lead with a 5-2 record.
With their third consecutive win, AFP also improved its chances of securing a semis berth, thanks to the outstanding performances of Romeo Almerol and Jerry Lumungsod.
Almerol, who finished with a double-double of 22 points and 11 boards, and Lumungsod, who added 22 points and seven rebounds, were crucial in the team’s convincing win over the Home Masters.
The OP-Presidential Management Staff Trailblazers also stayed alive in the quarterfinals race after defeating the PNP Responders, 97-91.
Jhon Kenneth Aljard led the Trailblazers with 29 points, while Cris Dalaten and Robert Jan Faundo contributed 27 and 26 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, the GSIS Furies grabbed the solo third spot with a 76-66 win over the Senate Defenders, powered by James Abugan’s 21 points and Marvin Enriquez’s 14 points.
The Trailblazers’ win also created a four-way tie for fourth to seventh places with the Senate, NHA, and DENR, all with similar 4-3 records.
The AFP Cavaliers are set to face the defending champions DENR Warriors on Sunday, aiming to extend their winning streak and solidify their position in the league.
