Far Eastern University is just one match away from completing a half-season sweep after a 3-1 victory over University of Santo Tomas in Round 6 of the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Chess Tournament on Saturday at the Adamson Gym.
The Lady Tamaraws increased their total to 10 match points with five straight wins and no losses.
The defending champions will aim for a perfect first round-robin against Ateneo de Manila University today.
Leading the charge for FEU in Round 6 was Woman National Master Vic Glysen Derotas (5/5), who secured her fifth consecutive victory on Board 2 with a dominant performance against Rohanisah Buto (1/4).
On Board 3, Woman National Master Mary Joy Tan (3/4) handed Christine Tabungar (0.5/3) her second loss in three outings, while Franchesca Largo (3/3) defeated UST’s Princess Oncita (2/3) on Board 4.
UST managed to score its only point in Round 6 when Precious Yecla (3/5) snapped Woman National Master Mhage Sebastian’s (4/5) four-match winning streak on the top board.
Meanwhile, De La Salle University took solo second place after achieving a narrow 2.5-1.5 victory over National University, led by Arena Grandmaster Sara Olendo (2/5) and Rinoa Sadey (4/5).
The Lady Woodpushers’ dynamic duo secured two victories on Board 2 and Board 3 against Yana de Vera (1/4) and Queen Rose Pamplona (1.5/4), respectively.
Woman National Master Francois Magpily (3/5) ensured La Salle’s win by holding Woman FIDE Master Allaney Doroy (3.5/5) to a draw on Board 1, while Lovely Geraldino (1/2) faltered against NU’s Natasja Balabbo (4/5) on Board 4.
University of the Philippines also registered its first win of the tournament, defeating winless Adamson University 2.5-1.5.
Jerlyn San Diego (2/4) set the tone for the Fighting Maroons by picking up her first win against Angela San Luis (0.5/5) on the top board.
Jallen Agra (3.5/6) continued her strong performance, taking down Mariane Flora (0/3) on Board 3, while rookie Raiza Locmayoan (2/4) secured her fourth consecutive draw against Phoebie Arellano (2.5/5) on Board 4.
Robelle de Jesus (2.5/4) provided Adamson University with its only win in Round 6, defeating UP’s Precious Ferrer (0/5) on Board 2.
