“Ayaw ko na maliitin kami kasi NU lang. Yun yung gusto kong maparating ng team ko.”
Those were the words of new Lady Bulldog Thea Pomar when asked about their hot start this season. Taking advantage of relatively easier match ups, National U have found themselves on top of the table. Their second win came on Saturday morning at the expense of the University of the East, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
All five players of the Bustillos-based side experienced two wins in a row, but it once again took just the first three to clinch the tie.
Pomar stayed perfect in singles play this season after a 21-6, 21-6 finish of Riella Dilla. The fourth-year player had to survive some errors in the match to fashion out the win in two games.
Jiselle Capillo then put the Bulldogs up to 2-0 with a similar conquest of Lyra Rosal. The latter, however, was a tough customer for the NU standout in some stretches of the match. Nonetheless, the Lady Bulldog finished the points to eventually win at 21-15, 21-11.
In the first doubles match, Kezziah Cuilao and Jhayvin Dizon proved too much of Pamela Fernandez and Erycka Labay, as they ultimately closed the tie at 21-7, 21-15.
Pomar and Capillo likewise secured the second doubles match for NU after blanking Heide and Lyra Rosal at 21-15, 21-7. Mitzi Pantoja then closed out the sweep, taking care of Labay with 21-11, 21-18.
The league-leaders Lady Bulldogs (2-0) will face their toughest test yet on Sunday, September 24, at 1pm, when they take on the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles (1-0). The Lady Warriors (0-2), on the other hand, will face the Adamson University Lady Falcons (1-1) on the same day and time.
