UST Tennisters take second win for solo second

After a sorry loss against the UE Red Warriors, there is nothing left to do but bounce back.

The University of Santo Tomas Male Tennisters snared their second win of the season at the expense of the De La Salle University Green Tennisters, 3-2, to take solo second placd, Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Sophomore Dave Mosqueda survived the tussle against fifth-year Kyle Parpan to take the lead for the Thomasians, 6-1, 6-4. This was before LA Canizares took the second singles match over last year’s Rookie of the Year Clarence Cabahug at 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Nonetheless, skipper Joel Cabusas and partner Bernlou Bering dispatched Hans Asistio and Dale Gorospe, 6-1, 6-2, to put the España-based side up at 2-1.

With the tie still up for grabs, the other doubles pairing of En-En Lopez and Warren Lagahit stunned Jonah Cano and Qoqo Allian to eventually secure the tie for the Tigers.

Betto Orendain took one back for La Salle to end the day after outlasting Nico Lanzado, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

For head coach Alexander Diego, the UST Tennisters needed this win. “Siyempre kailangan namin tong panalo para maka-add sa confidence, especially talo kami nung Wednesday.”

“Sa quality ng tennis nila (UST players), maayos naman yung pinakita nila,” the tactician commented. “Kailangan lang namin yung conditioning nila. Mahahaba kasi yung games, so yung physical conditioning kailangan naming mag-focus para iwas injury.”

The 2-1 Male Tennisters will face the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles (1-2) on Sunday, February 26 at 8am.

Later that day, the Green Archers will try to send the red-hot University of the East Red Warriors (4-0) later that day.
