Rookies Edgar Aban and Theo Libarnes played pivotal roles in Far Eastern University’s 2-0 victory over De La Salle in the UAAP Season 87 collegiate men’s football tournament on Thursday at the UP Football Stadium.
Substitute Aban scored a stunning one-touch goal in the 65th minute, extending the Tamaraws’ lead.
This marked Aban’s fifth goal of the season.
Earlier, Libarnes had opened the scoring for FEU in the 17th minute.
This victory was a significant bounce-back for the Tamaraws, who improved their points tally to nine after a disappointing 1-2 loss to Ateneo last Sunday.
“We are happy after losing our last game. Today was important to win again to keep our confidence,” said FEU’s Spanish head coach, Roman Oliver.
“We played three matches in seven days. There’s no time to dwell on what happened; we need to improve and learn from our mistakes. We made errors against Ateneo, but I think we’ve learned from them. We just need to focus.”
Meanwhile, De La Salle remains at four points.
The Green Booters will face Adamson University next Thursday, the same day FEU takes on the University of Santo Tomas.
“Next week we have another match. It is so fast, so we just need to keep working. These kids are amazing,” Oliver added. (JT)
