UAAP 86 WVB: UST fends off Adamson, sweeps first round

University of Santo Tomas completed a first round sweep with a 25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 28-26 win over Adamson University in the UAAP Season 86 Women’s Volleyball tournament at the SMART Araneta Coliseum on late Saturday evening.

The Golden Tigresses went undefeated in the first round for the first time since the 2006-07 season, where they went 6-0.

“Mahaba pa rin ang liga but still, luckily na lucky seven kami. Yung markado namin sa first round, yung 7-0 namin,” said UST coach Kungfu Reyes.

Despite their pressing academic commitments, the Tigresses were able to overcome a tough Lady Falcons side.

“Malaking challenge itong papasok na second round. Kasi nga grabe na rin ang inilalaro ng mga bata, tapos sumabay pa sa prelims. Worry nga namin, baka hindi makapag-perform ang mga bata kasi nga, left and right yung puyat. Iyon lang ang isang worry sa magiging performance,” said Reyes.

“Siguro hinawakan lang nila kung ano ang meron kami, yung sistema na meron na talagang team effort, collective effort. Sinusuwerte hanggang dulo,” he added.

Rookie Angge Poyos had 18 kills including the match-winning kill, 10 digs, and 10 receptions.

Jonna Perdido had two blocks for a 16-point outing, while Regina Jurado added 12 points, including two service aces for UST.

Setter Cassie Carballo tossed in 22 excellent sets and matched Jurado’s two aces.

Meanwhile, Detdet Pepito, the do-it-all Tigresses libero, collected 21 digs and 12 receptions.

On the other hand, Ishie Lalongisip had 14 points and 12 receptions for Adamson.

Lucille Almonte had two blocks for a 12-point effort and had 13 receptions, while AA Adolfo also scored 12 points.
