UAAP 86 WFB: Maria Layacan’s brace seals La Salle drubbing of UP

Maria Layacan extended her fine scoring form to lead De La Salle University to a 3-0 shutout of University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 86 Women’s Football Tournament Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

Layacan, a product of DLSU Integrated School, headed the ball home in the 8th and 80th minutes of the match to increase her personal goals tally to four for the season.

“I don’t wanna put her in the limelight but at least now she is coming out of her shell,” said coach Alvin Ocampo.

Defender Maye Mendaño covered the Lady Booters second goal in the 25th minute as La Salle capitalized on UP’s poor set-piece defending for all three goals.

The Lady Booters strengthened their hold on first place in the standings with six points and a goal difference of plus-8 behind back-to-back wins.

La Salle will go for its third straight victory against University of Santo Tomas this Saturday at 4 p.m. on the same pitch.

“We were able to manage the win. Like what I’ve said, our objective is to secure the first round to be one step into the final,” said Ocampo.

On the other hand, UP fell to third place on the table.

The Fighting Maroons are tied with the FEU Lady Tamaraws three points but the former have an inferior goal difference of minus-2 compared to the latter’s plus-1.

UP will try to bounce back against Ateneo de Manila University on March 16 at 4 p.m. at the same venue.

DLSU XI: Gumilao (GK), Isulat, Otom, Layacan, Teves, Mendaño, Del Campoi (C), Goñe, Castañeda, Santiago, Danoso.
