UAAP 85 WVB: Almonte, Adamson make quick work of UE, gift Yee first win


Adamson University needed just 63 minutes to beat University of the East, taking a 25-19, 25-9, 25-5 sweep, to open the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

After a tight first set that saw the Lady Falcons end strong with Lucille Almonte at the forefront to turn a close 20-18 lead to a 25-19 win, they returned in the second with more fire.

Adamson just straight out dominated the Lady Warriors, including 12 straight points that blew the game wide open, 17-3 en route to the 25-9 second frame tally.

The third period was no different as the Falcons rolled to a 25-5 clincher, ending the game in just under

“Good game for us to get playing time for all the players. Hopefully, the following games ma-sustain namin ito,” said first-year Lady Falcons head coach Jerry Yee.

Almonte led the Falcons with 12 points built on 10 attacks laced with eight excellent digs, while Trisha Tubu had 11 points in her debut.

Ayesha Juegos and Kate Santiago got seven points apiece while middle blocker Lorene Toring had five of her own.

The Lady Falcons dominated all scoring departments, including spiking (39-24), blocking (9-1), and service (4-0). They also got an assist from UE which committed 23 errors.

Ja Lana and KC Cepada produced seven points each for the Lady Warriors.

Up next for the Falcons will be defending champion National University on Wednesday, 10 am, at the same venue, while UE will face Ateneo de Manila University later in the day at 2 pm.
