UAAP 85 MVB: Mark Calado powers FEU to 4-set win over La Salle

Mark Calado was in the zone again, powering Far Eastern University to a 25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21 win over De La Salle University in the UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament at the Philsports Arena in Pasig, Saturday.

Noel Kampton, Billie Anima, JM Ronquillo, and Vince Maglinao did not let the Green Spikers get swept, leading them to a strong start in the third. They later sustained it the rest of the way to force a fourth period, 25-21.

FEU though showed its poise in the fourth with the set tied at 20 as Tamaraws Jomel Codilla, Martin Bugaoan, and JJ Javelona linked up. Then Calado finished the match with a straight-up block on Ronquillo’s attack.

“Composure yun talaga yung nawala tapos ang galing ng La Salle nag-adjust sila sa bilis. Kung ano yung bilis na meron sila, good thing nakaadapt kami,” said head coach Rei Diaz on what the Tamaraws lacked in the third.

Calado produced another 27-point effort for FEU on 23 attacks, three blocks, and an ace to go with six digs.

Bugaoan added 12, while Herald Domingo chimed in nine points in the victory.

The Tamaraws surged to their third straight win to improve to solo second at 4-1. On the other hand, De La Salle saw its three-game run snapped to fall to 3-2.

The Green Spikers were led by Ronquillo’s 15 points with six digs, while Kampton and Maglinao made 13 and 12 points, respectively, with the latter getting 19 excellent receptions as well.

FEU will next face University of the East on Wednesday at the Filoil Ecooil Centre. Meanwhile, De La Salle will wait until March 19 to battle Adamson University at the same San Juan venue.
