University of the Philippines outlasted Far Eastern University 83-76 in the UAAP Season 84 Men’s Basketball Tournament, Saturday, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
With the result, UP ends the first round with a 6-1 record after winning six straight games while FEU finishes the round with a 3-4.
After an RJ Abarrientos free throw cut UP’s lead to 73-70, Zavier Lucero sank a three-point shot that gave the Fighting Maroons a 76-70 cushion with 1:50 left to go in the ballgame.
However, FEU’s Xyrus Torres cut the deficit to 73-76 with a three-point shot of his own with 1:37 remaining in the contest. L-Jay Gonzales then trimmed the separation further to 74-76 with a free throw with 1:24 to go.
Unanswered points from Carl Tamayo and Joel Cagulangan then increased UP’s lead to 80-74 with 45.1 seconds remaining. Gonzales, though, was able to cut the deficit to 76-80 via a lay-up with 36 ticks on the clock.
UP captain Ricci Rivero then sealed the win for the Fighting Maroons with a fine and-one play with 14.4 seconds left.
