UAAP 84: Genesis, Santiago connive as Adamson deals UP first loss


Adamson University is starting to build up steam, dealing University of the Philippines its first loss, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 25-11 for its second straight win in the UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball tournament, Thursday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Lady Falcons founded a 10-point, 15-5 advantage to bury the Fighting Maroons late in the fourth set. Lorene Toring fired two aces in a 4-0 spurt which extended Adamson’s lead to as much as 13, 23-10.

Alyssa Bertolano’s attack went long which pushed the Lady Falcons at match point but Lorie Bernardo scored off a quick to keep the Fighting Maroons alive. Apryll Tagsip then clinched the game off a quick.

“So far marami pa kaming dapat ayusin sa team,” said Lady Falcons head coach Lerma Giron. “Kumbaga para kang nag titimpla ng kape, kailangan mong alamin kung matabang, matamis, so hanggang makuha mo yung tamang timpla.”

Trisha Genesis sustained her fine form with 15 points off 11 attacks, two blocks, and two aces along with 10 excellent receptions while Lorene Toring recorded four blocks to finish with 14 points to help Adamson move up to 2-2 in the standings.

Lucille Almonte had an all-around outing with 13 points, 11 excellent digs, and six excellent receptions while Kate Nhorylle, who provided the spark off the bench, had 11 points. Louie Romero dished out 23 excellent sets to go along with two points.

The Lady Falcons started hot in the match, blasting the Fighting Maroons with an 8-1 start in the first set. Though UP managed to keep the game close, Adamson eventually took the opener for the early 1-0 advantage. The Fighting Maroons tied the game in the second set but the Lady Falcons took the lead once more with a huge victory in the third set.

This is UP’s first loss of the tournament after being University of the East, Far Eastern University, and University of Sto. Tomas to start the season. The Fighting Maroons were led by Alyssa Bertolano with 15 points.

Irah Jaboneta had six markers and 12 excellent digs while Jhewel Encarnacion, who was coming off a 16-point outing against UST last Tuesday, ended up with just three points in three sets played.

Adamson will face FEU on Saturday at 10:00 AM while UP will take on Ateneo on the same day at 6:00 PM.
