The top collegiate teams in the University Belt have come together to help one another prepare for their upcoming collegiate leagues.
The newly formed University Belt Basketball Cup will kick off on Wednesday, April 9, with eight schools competing.
Headlining the competitors are UAAP schools University of Santo Tomas, National University, and Adamson University.
NCAA members San Beda University, San Sebastian College-Recoletos, and Arellano University are also participating.
Rounding out the teams are UCAL powerhouse Centro Escolar University and ISAA runner-up La Consolacion College – Manila.
The tournament is the brainchild of Arellano’s Peter Cayco, San Beda team manager Jude Roque, and UST team manager and NCAA consultant to the management committee Waiyip Chong.
Their goal is to provide a highly competitive yet cost-effective pre-season basketball tournament for schools in the University Belt area of the City of Manila, which they can use to prepare for their respective mother leagues.
San Beda’s mancom representative Atty. Jonas Cabochan will serve as the chairman of the league, while former Arellano head coach Cholo Martin will take on the role of commissioner.
Opening day will feature eight games, with match-ups including San Beda vs. Adamson, Arellano vs. La Consolacion, NU vs. San Sebastian, and UST vs. CEU. The games will be held at the San Beda Gym.
The teams will compete in a single round-robin tournament, with the top four advancing to the semifinals. The top two seeds will have a twice-to-beat advantage. The Finals will be a best-of-three series.
Each of the participating schools will have the opportunity to host a gameday in their respective gyms.
