Xavier School-standout Tyler Tio can finally suit-up for the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles after acquiring his Filipino citizenship Tuesday afternoon. Solicitor General Jose Calida helped Tio with the process.

Tio, now 19 years old, was one of the top recruits from the 2016 recruitment class. A floor general, the 5-foot-11 guard is a lethal scorer as well, making his mark during the 2016 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.FILOIL-2016-ADMU-LPU-Tyler-Tio Tio acquires Filipino citizenship, to suit-up for Ateneo in UAAP ADMU Basketball News UAAP - philippine sports news

However, Tio is a Canadian citizen, making him a red flag for most schools last year. He was declared ineligible for the 79th season of the UAAP after failing to prove that he is a Filipino citizen during the line-up deliberation.

Ateneo still took the risk with the guard and it has finally paid off.

The Ateneo sophomore will join Anton Asistio, Matthew Nieto, Jolo Mendoza, Gian Mamuyac, and Dan Wong for the upcoming 80th season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball tournament.
