Tim Cone said that nothing is set in stone yet amidst reports of his appointment as the new head coach of Gilas by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
The Barangay Ginebra mentor is leaving the answers entirely to the federation, which has announced designations to key positions recently but has yet to name the one who would man the sidelines of the men’s national team.
“There’s nothing definite,” he said shortly after their 106-93 win over NorthPort to reach the PBA Season 48 Commissioner’s Cup semis, Friday night.
Cone did admit that he had already been interviewed by the SBP regarding the position but there remains no answer whatsoever at this point.
“They’ve interviewed me. They talked to me about it but there’s no firm answer yet. That’s where we are at this point,” he shared.
Cone has been linked to the Gilas head coaching position for some time now, and rumors have become persistent in past weeks especially with the first window of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers coming in February.
Fans and pundits online have been vouching for the PBA’s only 25-time champion coach to call the shots for the men’s team, especially after steering the country to its first Asian Games gold medal in 61 years.
But then again, Cone said that everything will only be known once the federation issues an official announcement regarding the coaching job.
“We’ve had some conversations but nothing’s been done so far. I think everybody has jumped the gun on this. I think it’s up to the SBP,” he said.
“They’re up in the air about it … I think you have to wait for their announcement on how they want to do it if that’s exactly–if I’m the guy,” added Cone.
