Shrugging off troubled shooting in the first half, the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses cut a two-game skid, after sailing past the University of the East Lady Red Warriors, 54-36, and stay in contention for a spot in the Final Four of the women’s basketball tournament.
The Lady Warriors were plagued offensively the entire game, managing to sink only fourteen out of sixty field goal attempts the entire game. Though the cagers from Recto were able to stay within striking distance for most of the first half, a third quarter surge by Tigresses would put the squad from Esapana up by as much as 23 points. With UE’s usual scorers Love joy Sto. Domingo and Ruthlaine Tacula struggling to find the east basket, UST would head into the final quarter with a commanding 46-24 lead, almost doubling the Lady Warriors’ scoring otput.
Center Eunique Chan would come alive for UE in the fourth quarter, keeping the fire alive for the troubled Lady Warriors, dominating the paint and limiting UST’s scoring options inside the arc. The late UE resurgence would hold the Tigresses to eight points in the final period, but with no one else rising to the occasion for UE, the Tigresses would enter the final two minutes with a twenty-point lead.
Lore Rivera led UST with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Chan, the only bright spot for the Lady Warriors, scored 19 of UE’s 36 points, while grabbing 9 rebounds.
The Tigresses climb to 5-5, bouncing back from back-to-back losses to NU and La Salle. The Lady Warriors meanwhile fall to 2-7, unable to cut their own losing streak.
