After outscoring the University of the East Lady Warriors 20-10 in the third quarter, the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws mounted a second half surge to leave their opponents in the dust and take home their fourth win in the women’s basketball tournament, 59-50.
The squad from Recto and the squad from Morayta figured in a trade of baskets for most of the first half. Despite a strong second quarter showing from the Lady Warriors, it was the Lady Tamaraws who would cling to the lead coming into halftime, 30-25.
Baskets from Jacqueline Tanaman and Angel Arellano to open the third quarter would signal the start of an FEU resurgence, as the Lady Tamaraws would go on to sink twenty points while holding their opponents to 10. With UE unable to find an answer for FEU’s offensive, the Lady Tams would only continue to pull away and build a double digit lead towards the end of the quarter.
Though FEU would continue to rake in points, Danice Losala would come alive in the fourth quarter to help keep UE in the running. However, unable to put up a fight in the paint due to the presence of FEU’s Claire Castro and April Siat at the post, the Lady Warriors would resort to shooting from the outside, the only spot inside the arc they appeared comfortable to shoot from. With time on the Lady Tams’ side, UE would only finally be able to trim the lead to single digits in the final minute of the ballgame.
Claire Castro had 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks for the Lady Tamaraws. April Siat contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds a block. Danice Llosala led the scoring for UE with 12 points, while Eunique Chan had 11.
The Lady Tamaraws join the Ateneo Lady Blue Eagles, UST Growling Tigresses, and Adamson Lady Soaring Falcons at the 4-4 spot. Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors slip to solo seventh at 2-6.
