Team Lakay takes home wins to open ONE Global Rivals

ONE Championship’s annual Summer show in Manila opened with a bang as two Team Lakay fighters went home with wins, while Indonesian Sunoto shocked the Philippine crowd.

Kingad makes quick work of Malaysian upstart Haidar

In a battle of two up-and-coming stars, Team Lakay MMA’s Danny Kingad made quick work of Malaysian Muhamad Haidar, who was making his professional debut.

After a strong leg kick by Kingad to start the fight, the Team Lakay fighter immediately went for a shot and was able to slam his opponent down hard on the mat. Haidar tried to keep up but was again slammed down ten seconds later. While on side control, Kingad rained short knees to the head of his opponent that exposed Haidar to the mount. Once on the mount, Kingad rained on at least 40 unanswered shots that called for the stoppage at the 2:20 mark.

“This is my debut and I am just thankful to my coaches and ONE Championship,” the young Lakay upstart said.

Kingad goes to 4-0 in his young career while Haidar falls in his debut.

Result: Danny Kingad def. Muhamad Haidar via TKO (ground and pound) (2:20, rd1)

Indonesian journeyman Sunoto dominates Filipino Soriano

Sunoto displayed a masterful performance in a dominant win over Filipino Burn Soriano.

The 31-year-old Indonesian quickly secured a double-leg take-down to start the bout. The Filipino tried to fight off his opponent by attempting a kimura with 3:50 remaining in the round. However, the technique went wrong, resulting in him letting go of the attempt 30 seconds later. Short elbows by Sunoto led to him getting the full mount. After at least eight rights, and with Soriano not attempting to defend, the fight was stopped with a minute and ten ticks remaining.

“I wanted to get on top and pour and pour,” the Indonesian said. “When he went for the Kimura, it was okay. And then I just ground and pound.”

Sunoto is now 4-2 in his MMA career, while Burn Soriano’s slate is an even 2-2

Result: Sunoto def. Burn Soriano via Referee’s stoppage (ground and pound) (3:50, rd1)

Osenio receives best birthday gift of her life

April Osenio, itching for her first win, opened the bout aggressively with short strikes to a launching Hills. The Team Lakay atomweight tried to go for a hip throw but was pushed by the Fil-Aussie for the take-down. Hills then fought off an armbar attempt by Osenio, and she was able to go to Osenio’s guard. As Hills threw hammerfists to shake-off Osenio’s guard, the 21-year-old Baguio-native was able to lock in an armbar for the submission win with 1:36 left.

“I train it everyday,” said an exhausted Osenio. “Thank you very much for this fight.”

“This is an advanced birthday gift to me,” Osenio, who turns 22 years old in a few hours, added.

With the win, Osenio wins her first MMA bout (1-1). Hills is now on a three-fight losing streak (2-4)

Result: April Osenio defeats Natalie Gonzales Hills via submission (armbar) (3:24, rd1)
