Stags drive off Generals for 7th win

The San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags look to build on its amazing second round campaign for its preparation for Season 93.

The Golden Stags won its sixth game in its last eight outings, this time disposing the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals 87-71 Thursday afternoon at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The win gives the already-eliminated the sole seventh spot in the standings.

“Wala namang no bearing game sa amin,” first year San Sebastian head coach Egay Macaraya shared. “Yung mga bata, gustong matuto at gusto nilang maging ready sa kung ano mang darating.”

Junior Michael Calisaan was San Sebastian’s lead instigator in the rout, accumulating 22 points in the game to go along with 14 rebounds, nine coming from the offensive end. Jerick Fabian also notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

It was all San Sebastian after the opening stanza as the lead grew to as high as 20 points, 72-52, early in the final frame.

“Yung motivation namin kahit sa practice, pukpukan kasi everybody wants to improve at gusto nilang matuto magsama-sama,” Macaraya added. “Kita na yung samahan ng mga bata.”

However, with a game that has no implications whatsoever, things got heated on the court as the Generals struggled to keep pace with the Stags.

Sidney Onwubere, after being assessed his first technical in the latter part of the second frame for an inadvertent knee on rookie Alfren Gayosa, was disqualified from the game after an attempted elbow to Ryan Costelo with 7:21 remaining in the game.

The third year forward finished the game with 19 points and seven rebounds in just 22 minutes of game time.

Allyn Bulanadi and RK Ilagan scored 14 and 13 markers respectively.

With the season coming to a close, Macaraya shared that the seeds for Season 93 have been planted.

“I blame myself for the short preparation,” he closed. “Kulang kami sa preparation, besides maraming distraction sa amin kasi transition period. But good thing is nag-umpisa na ang mga tamang ginagawa namin papunta sa goal.”

Hamadou Laminou notched a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds as well.

The San Sebastian Stags (7th, 7-10) play its final game of the season on Thursday, September 22 against the JRU Heavy Bombers (5th, 9-8) at 2:00pm. On the other hand, the EAC Generals (9th, 5-11) will play its penultimate game of the season on Tuesday, September 20 against the winless Saint Benilde Blazers at 12:00nn.
