Spikers Turf: Bugaoan, Cignal make quick work of Army, extend streak to 6

Cignal dominated slumping Philippine Army en route to its sixth straight win in the 2023 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference, 25-18, 25-20, 25-14, Friday night at Paco Arena.

The HD Spikers strengthened their grip of the top spot behind a pristine 6-0 record without even dropping a single set.

“Sinasabi ko lang sa team na huwag magsasawa kasi ang hirap eh lalo nasa taas kami. There’s no way to go up pa but to maintain our standing,” shared Cignal head coach Dexter Clamor.

The HD Spikers was flexing throughout the match, cruising to early leads and never letting up, protecting the margin to win in just one hour and 16 minutes.

JP Bugaoan was the star for Cignal anew with 13 points spread through seven spikes, four kill blocks, and two service aces, while Peter Torres added eight points of his own.

Marck Espejo produced seven points in two sets to go with nine excellent receptions, while Wendel Miguel scored six as all HD Spiker were fielded for the third consecutive game.

“Lahat naman kasi nagsisimula sa preparation. Nagprepare lang din kami for this game kasi until now may mga pinopolish pa rin kaming lapses namin during games,” added Clamor.

Army was led by Benjaylo Labide’s nine points and Mark Enciso’s eight as the Troopers absorbed their fourth consecutive loss for a 2-5 record, good for just eighth.

Cignal will gun for 7-0 on Sunday against lowly Vanguard while Army faces familiar foe Philippine Air Force on Wednesday with both looking to arrest their respective skids.
