Sports patrons Frank and Jacob Lao have tapped a foreign consultant for the teams they are helping out.
Slovenian coach Zoran Martic will help out Converge, College of Saint Benilde, Letran High School, and Pampanga Royce Hotel, serving as team consultant to all of those teams.
“I am aware that basketball is immensely popular in the Philippines, and that you will be hosting the World Cup this summer,” said the 58-year-old tactician who has coached all over the world.
“I am truly excited to be here and engage with the coaches.”
Martic was a former rival head coach of Tab Baldwin when the two were coaching in Europe.
He was also previously part of Chiba’s coaching staff during its championship run back in the 2020-21 season.
Martic attended the Blazers’ practice on Wednesday.
“Coach Zoran is a friend of mine from before through Coach (Rajko) Toroman. I brought up the idea of bringing in a consultant to help our team because my goal is to help develop players and prepare them for their future,” said Blazers head coach Charles Tiu.
“The players are still young, so there is certainly plenty of room for improvement. Perhaps I can introduce them to a slightly different coaching approach,” Martic added.
Martic will also help out in the practices of the FiberXers, the Squires, and Pampanga Royce Hotel.
“As I mentioned earlier, I am genuinely thrilled to be here. I look forward to conversing with the coaches, exchanging our experiences, and more. Additionally, I am eager to learn about your country and your culture,” said Martic.
“Boss Frank and Jacob have been incredibly supportive. In fact, they are committed to elevating the level of basketball in the Philippines, which is why they agreed to have Coach Zoran join us,” expressed Tiu.
“His expertise will not only benefit our team but also the multiple teams they are supporting. They have played a significant role in enhancing basketball here in the Philippines.”
