Sherwin Meneses clarifies bench move: Alyssa Valdez’s playing time a tactical decision

The minutes of Creamline team captain Alyssa Valdez have consistently decreased in the Premier Volleyball League Second All-Filipino Conference.

Valdez played sparingly in the team’s first five matches before eventually sitting out the Cool Smashers’ 25-19, 25-21, 25-16 sweep of F2 Logistics at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday night.

Creamline head coach Sherwin Meneses clarified that his decision to bench the three-time PVL MVP has nothing to do with her past injuries. He expressed that he merely wants to provide other players with an opportunity to shine and carve out a role in the rotation.

“Yes, 100-percent si Alyssa ngayon.

“Kasi yung team naman ngayon talagang may nawala, may dumating, talagang tinitignan namin sa ensayo, talagang sino yung magpeperform,” said Meneses after the victory.

“Alyssa maganda yung condition ngayon, siguro, nabigyan lang ng opportunity sina Pons na makalaro ngayong araw. Let’s see sa mga susunod na game pero, syempre, Alyssa is Alyssa, makakabalik din yan,” he added.

Similar to Bernadeth Pons and the rest of the Cool Smashers who played significant minutes against the Cargo Movers, Meneses assured that Valdez will have her chance in the team’s upcoming games.

“Siguro may dino-discover lang kami ng konti, knowing na mahaba kasi yung conference ngayon napakaganda kung yung playing time ay hati hati. So let’s see sa mga susunod na games,” said the PVL champion coach.

Meneses also reiterated that Valdez remains the heart and soul of the Cool Smashers, regardless of her playing time.

“Siya pa rin talaga ang heart and soul talaga ng Creamline.”
