Shane Reterta balances scoring, mentorship in sophomore year

Shane Reterta is making the most of the opportunity handed to her in her sophomore year — a starting spot for De La Salle University.

An off-the-bench sparkplug last season behind the tandem of Angel Canino and Alleiah Malaluan, the 5-foot-9 outside spiker from Bethel Academy has now been inserted into the starting six of the Lady Spikers this UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Women’s Volleyball Tournament, following Malaluan’s graduation.

For Reterta, her growing confidence comes with the increased playing time she’s receiving this year.

“Siguro yung character ko ngayon mas tumibay since ako na yung naglalaro sa loob ng court and isa na ako sa kailangang tumulong sa team,” said Reterta.

Reterta played a key role in La Salle’s 25-12, 18-25, 25-23, 25-14 victory over University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday, contributing 10 points and 15 excellent receptions.

Once a rookie on the bench, absorbing lessons from her senior teammates, Reterta is now looking to pass on her experience to the second-stringers — especially rookie Ella De Guzman, who plays the same position as her.

“Kailangan ko rin po tulungan yung mga rookies na ma-up din yung laro nila and yung mga tulad po ni Ella na ka-position ko po,” said Reterta.

“Siyempre, bata po, may mga times talaga na nawawalan ng kumpiyansa, so inuup din po namin and sa mga kasama.”

Reterta’s resilience mirrored the Lady Spikers’ determination during the third set, when the Golden Tigresses threatened to take a 2-1 set lead after building a 20-12 advantage.

But La Salle refused to give up, working together to overcome the deficit and eventually take the third set with a 13-3 run, 25-23.

Now at 9-0, Reterta and the Lady Spikers know they cannot rest on their laurels, aware that the competition will only get tougher.

“Siguro po kung nakikita po namin na gusto nilang manalo, siguro mas eager po ako and yung team na habulin at maunahan po sila kasi hindi pa naman po tapos yung game hanggat hindi pa 25 pa talaga yung points,” she said.
