Samantha Catantan pierced gold in the 31st Southeast Asian Games fencing competition.
The 20-year-old fencing prodigy annexed the women’s individual foil gold after winning past Singapore’s Maxine Jie Xin Wong in the gold medal bout, 14-12, at the Hanoi Indoor Games Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Catantan, who is currently in her sophomore year at Penn State, found redemption after missing on the gold on home soil in 2019 when Singapore’s Amita Berthier took the gold.
Kemei Cheung of Singapore and Chayanutphat Shinnakerdchoke rounded the podium in the said event.
Former University of Santo Tomas stalwart Noelito Jose Jr. ended with the silver in the men’s individual epee. He lost in a tightly fought final contest, 11-15, against Vietnam’s Nhat Nguyen Tien.
Malaysia’s I Jie Koh and Singapore’s Simon Renjie Lee took the bronzes.
The one gold and one silver put the Philippines on the medal tally for the second day of fencing competitions.
