After a long run of losses, San Sebastian College-Recoletos finally put an end to it in the NCAA Season 95 Women’s Volleyball Tournament, Friday afternoon.
And the Lady Stags did it in emphatic fashion, belting Mapua University with a straight-set 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 whipping at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
“Sobrang saya po namin. Hindi po naming inunderestimate ‘yung kalaban namin, pero sabi naming ang gusto lang po naming is ‘yung mga natalo po naming last year, dapat po matalo po naming sila ulit… Last year nakuhanan kami ng set ng Mapua. Dapat ngayon, straight set natin sila,” San Sebastian libero Jewelle Bermillo gushed.
The morale-boosting victory quenched a five-game drought for the Lady Stags, who have breathed life to their win-loss record that now stands at 1-5.
“‘Yung pagpasok sa ‘min ng NCAA [season 95] sobrang kasi una agad talo, tapos sunod-sunod na talo. So sabi ko po sa kanila, itong game po natin ng Mapua, kailangan mas angat na tayo sa kanila. ‘Di tayo pwede papayag na matatalo din nila tayo,” Bermillo said, recalling a huddle before the match.
The Lady Stags answered her call, putting up a strong stand on both offense and defense to fend off the Lady Cardinals.
Veronica Carreon led the way for San Sebastian with 15 points anchored on 12 attacks and a pair of blocks. Shane Requierme contributed 11 markers, while Amaka Tan chimed in 10 in the triumph.
Alexia Sison churned out the offense with 15 excellent sets, as the Lady Stags outgunned the Lady Cardinals, 40 to 25.
Mapua, which slid to a 1-4 card, had no scorer in double-digits.
Lorraine Barias topped the Lady Cardinals with eight points. Meanwhile, Angeline Magundayao and Princess Babiera managed six markers each.
San Sebastian seeks to build from this win when it collides with Emilio Aguinaldo College on Thursday, February 6. Meanwhile, Mapua tries to regain its winning form when it faces Jose Rizal University on Monday, February 3. Both matches will be held at the same venue.
