Group A of the inaugural 2022-23 East Asia Super League is shaping up to be a doozy.
And it will revolve around the Philippines’ top team and three Filipino players plying their trade overseas.
By the luck of the draw, reigning PBA Philippine Cup champion San Miguel will meet Filipino prospects Rhenz Abando and Sedrick Barefield, while also getting to meet an old opponent in Jay Washington.
During the draw held at the Shangri-La at the Fort, Manila back on June 28, the eventual Philippine Cup champion was slotted in Group A along with Taipei Fubon, Ryukyu, and Anyang KGC.
Anyang KGC snatched Rhenz Abando from Letran a month after the draw. Then just last week, the Beermen defeated the TNT Tropang Giga in an epic seven-game series to be named in the pool.
A week after the PBA Finals, the Golden Kings and the Braves signed Washington and Barefield, respectively.
Each game in the group will definitely be a must-watch. And the hostilities will begin on October 12 when the Beermen meet Abando in Anyang.
Sources have also told Tiebreaker Times that Ryukyu will be tapping “one of the best prospects in the collegiate level” when Washington’s contract expires on December 31.
