After touring the Intramuros area in Manila despite rains and playing basketball with street ballers along Anda St., Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio then took part in a skills camp as part of the adidas Take on Manila tour Saturday.
Grade schoolers and high schoolers participated in the camp headlined by trainer Jeffrey Cariaso. Kevin Ferrer, Jericho Cruz, Aljon Mariano, Simon Enciso, and Jio Jalalon also assisted in the event at the Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong.
Rubio gamely distributed shirts to the participants and also took part in some of the drills. He later on picked a 10-year-old camper to play against him 1-on-1.
Later in the exhibition match featuring a mixture of basketball players and TV personalities, Rubio did the ceremonial toss.
Earlier, Rubio also participated in a football camp at the Chelsea Blue Pitch along with Phil and James Younghusband.
The Spanish guard said he used to play football a lot as a kid, and continues to do so to help him stay in shape during the offseason.
As the point guard heads back home, he says returning would be definitely part of his to-do list.
“The reception is overwhelming,” he said. “The basketball talent here is crazy. I would love to come back to play more street ball and probably tour more places.”
