Rhayyan Amsali ends sabbatical, commits to UST

Rhayyan Amsali will be making his basketball comeback. But it won’t be at San Beda University.

The 6-foot-4 winger out of Zamboanga has committed to University of Santo Tomas.

UST team manager Waiyip Chong confirmed the development to Tiebreaker Times.

Amsali, 22, made his collegiate debut back in NCAA Season 97 with the Red Lions.

In his freshman season, Amsali averaged 5.08 points and 3.25 rebounds in 12 games.

However, he took a leave of absence in Season 98 to reconnect with his Islamic faith and take Islamic studies.

Now, he is set to begin a new chapter in his career with the Growling Tigers.

He joins James Una as the first recruits of UST in the return of Pido Jarencio.

Both Una and Amsali will have to sit out one year before being eligible for UAAP Season 87.

Franz Diaz, meanwhile, will not be pushing through with his ‘two-and-thru’ year with the Growling Tigers as he already played as a ‘special guest player’ in a pro league.

Back in 2021, he suited up for Pagadian in the VisMin Super Cup.
