Resurgent Red Spikers roar to opening day win over Generals

The San Beda College Red Spikers blanked the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22, to open their campaign this season on a high note, Wednesday afternoon at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

Led by the hard-hitting Mark Enciso, the Mendiola-based squad edged out the Generals on the scoring skills, 33-30 on attacks and 8-3 on blocks.

San Beda head coach Jose Roque believes his team can still do better than what they have shown.

“Masaya kami [na manalo] kasi first game din namin. May first point na kami, may first win,” Roque said. “Though yung game, to tell you the truth, hindi pa ganung ka-satisfied.”

It was a tussle in all of the sets as EAC kept in step of San Beda after trailing by as much as six points. Zedrick Cilocilo poured in most of his 12 points in their comeback attempts.

Nonetheless, Enciso et al got the job done in the crucial stretches of the match, before the top scorer closed it out with an emphatic kill.

Only Enciso finished with double digits, but all but one Red Spiker contributed at least a point. Gerald Zabala led the support cast with 7 points, while Earl Gonzales scored 7, all in the third set.

Aside from Cilocilo, Joshua Miña had 10 points for the Generals.

The Scores:

SBC (3) – Enciso 11, Zabala 7, E. Gonzales 6, Viray 5, Santos 5, Mascariñas 3, Patenio 3, Manliclic 2, Desuyo 1, Genobaten 1, B. Gonzales 0, Casin (L), Nicandro (L).

EAC (0) – Cilocilo 12, Miña 10, Lim 6, Rasing 4, Garcia 2, Castellano 2, Guinto 0, Sebastian 0, Gorospe (L).
