Regina Jurado is no stranger to performing well in big games for the University of Santo Tomas.
The 5-foot-7 opposite hitter out of Cebu once again proved her worth on the court as the Golden Tigresses secured a win against De La Salle University last Sunday.
Jurado shared that facing tough teams like NU and La Salle this season has been a major boost for her. She admitted that her play is still inconsistent, but contributing to the team’s victories gives her happiness, especially when she helped Eya Laure’s monster outing against the Lady Spikers, where Laure scored a season-high 29 points.
When asked if facing formidable teams is a big boost for her, Jurado answered with a resounding “Yes.”
“Lalo na kung i-runthrough ‘yung laro ko this season medyo inconsistent pa rin siya,” she continued.
“So happy ako kapag like I can contribute to the team kasi malaking tulong to talaga, hindi lang si ate Eya [Laure] dapat ‘yung magco-contribute.”
In the first round against the Lady Bulldogs, Jurado showed no fear and scored 18 points with 14 attacks, two blocks, and two aces, along with 11 excellent digs to lead UST in a five-set win. Against La Salle, she recorded 12 points on 12 excellent digs to help UST hand La Salle their first loss this season.
Overall, Jurado is proud that each member of the team contributed to their victory against the Lady Spikers. She is tallying 95 points built on 78 spikes, five blocks, and 12 aces so far.
Despite their recent success, Jurado’s teammate, Cassie Carballo, reminded the team that they still have room for improvement. Jurado echoed Carballo’s sentiments and shared that they need to continue polishing their skills as the job is not yet done.
“Yun po polisihing din tulad nung sabi ng coach namin kanina sa meeting, morning-afternoon training pa din,” Jurado said.
“Kasi madami pa din kailangan dagdagan, hindi lang sapat ‘yung sa laro ngayon.”
