Rae Tolentino’s equalizer vs UST boosts Ateneo’s UAAP women’s football semis hopes

By: Nicole Parallag

Rae Tolentino’s crucial goal helped Ateneo de Manila University move closer to the UAAP Season 89 Collegiate Women’s Football Final Four, as the Blue Eagles salvaged a 1–1 draw against University of Santo Tomas Lady Booters on Wednesday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

Trailing by a goal, Tolentino leveled the match in the 44th minute by capitalizing on a free kick. The result allows Ateneo to strengthen its hold on fourth place in the standings with 10 points and just two matches remaining in the elimination round.

The Blue Eagles hold a five-point cushion over UST, which must win its remaining matches and hope Ateneo fails to earn another point to keep its Final Four hopes alive.

The result also secured University of the Philippines a place in the Final Four.

“Well, unfortunately, the team didn’t play the game plan,” shared head coach Bob Manlulo.

“Hopes are still alive because we drew a game, so we still have two more games to go. At least we can win one game to at least to have a spot in the Final Four,” he added.

Ateneo nearly took the lead when Jada Bicierro unleashed an attempt, but UST goalkeeper Lizlie Garcia was on hand to make the save.

The Lady Booters drew first blood in the 11th minute, with Joyce Gemberva finding the back of the net after connecting with a perfectly timed cross from Princess Amilhamja.

UST then pushed for a late winner, with Stephanie Logastua attempting to snatch all three points for the España-based squad. However, her shot sailed over the crossbar, leaving both teams to settle for a share of the spoils.
