Petro Gazz shrugged off an initial setback in the first set to outlast Chery Tiggo, 20-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-16, and seize an early solo lead in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference semifinals at the Philsports Arena on Tuesday evening.
The Angels joined Choco Mucho at 1-0, but the former garnered the full three points after winning in four sets.
On the other hand, the Flying Titans only accrued two points after winning in five.
“I’m really proud of the team – everyone did a really good job. We stayed locked in for the most part,” said Petro Gazz star Brooke Van Sickle, who tallied 21 points, 12 digs, and eight excellent receptions.
Leading by just a point early in the fourth set, 9-8, Van Sickle, MJ Phillips, and Djanel Cheng collaborated to establish a larger cushion heading into the second technical timeout, 16-10.
A 15-minute stoppage ensued due to technical difficulties, but it couldn’t halt the Angels’ momentum. They secured victory in two hours and 37 minutes.
Petro Gazz will aim for a 2-0 record on Thursday against Creamline, who sits at 0-1, at the same venue.
Aiza Pontillas also displayed veteran savvy with 18 points. Meanwhile, Phillips, playing in just her second game this conference, contributed 16 points.
Jonah Sabete added 13 points along with 18 digs, while Remy Palma chipped in 10 points in the victory.
The Crossovers, who concluded the eliminations with a seven-game winning streak, dropped to 0-1 alongside Creamline.
They look to bounce back against Choco Mucho on Thursday as well.
Eya Laure, who sustained an injury to her right pinky halfway through the fourth frame, led Chery Tiggo with 15 points, while Ara Galang contributed 10 points.
The team missed Mylene Paat, who is in South Korea for the KOVO tryouts.
