PVL: Petro Gazz continues to roll, eliminates Army from contention

Petro Gazz made it two consecutive wins, eliminating the winless Army-Black Mamba via a sweep, 25-21, 25-10, 25-13 in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference at the Filoil EcoOil Centre, Saturday.

MJ Phillips, who only played in the first two sets, spearheaded the Angels’ dominant win that helped them tie F2 logisitcs at the third spot with identical 4-2 win-loss records. She finished with a game-high 16 points on nine attacks, four blocks, and three aces.

Aiza Maizo-Pontillas added 10 points on seven attacks, two aces, and a block while Remy Palma had nine markers which include two rejections.

“Well, I’m happy kasi I asked my players to be committed and consistent doon sa magandang ginagawa nila. They were committed and consistent doon sa goal nila today,” said Petro Gazz head coach Oliver Almadro.

After a close first set, the Angels stepped on the gas and dominated the Lady Troopers, who were limited to just 19 attack points in the contest along with just five excellent sets.

“I really hope that the consistency, the intensity, and the level of play will be like this [sa susunod na games]. Mataas ang level. If we will be committed sa pagiging better ng best namin every game and everyday, I guess I’m happy na sana nga patuloy na tumaas,” Almadro added.

Chie Saet, who shared playmaking duties with starter Djanel Cheng, tallied 11 excellent sets – more than double of Army’s total output. Cienne Cruz, meanwhile, had 10 excellent receptions and six excellent digs.

On the other hand, no player from the Lady Troopers reached double digits in scoring with Jeanette Villareal and Nene Bautista scoring six and five points, respectively.
