Volleyball federation national team development chairman Tony Boy Liao hopes that two of the country’s finest volleyball coaches respond to the call of the country.
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation is eyeing both National University head coach Dante Alinsunurin and De La Salle University head coach Ramil De Jesus as the chief tacticians of the men’s and women’s national volleyball teams respectively for the upcoming 31st Southeast Asian Games.
Though nothing has been set in stone, Liao is hoping that the two will be interested in mentoring the teams.
“We haven’t decided yet on who are the coaches for the Men’s and Women’s teams. The National Teams Commission has still to decide on the process of how to select the coaches,” Liao told Tiebreaker Times.
“We’re having a meeting on Monday to decide.”
The two coaches will be in for a challenge, as even national teams need to clear many hurdles before they can hold camp.
Alinsunurin, a four-time UAAP champion coach, was the architect of the team that finished silver in the 2019 SEAG. He has been supervising the national team’s virtual training sessions since the pandemic began.
De Jesus, an 11-time UAAP champion coach and five-time PSL champion mentor, was actually named head coach of the women’s side back in April of 2018. He later had to relinquish the role due to politics. He was replaced by Shaq delos Santos.
In a report by the Philippine Star, Rebisco will still be the chief sponsor of the squad. Meanwhile, Tina Salak, Michael Verano, Odjie Mamon, Oliver Mora, and Rollie Delfino will be part of Liao’s committee.
