Marked as the “team to beat” by majority of the coaches, Petron’s star-studded lineup will surely be a headache for a lot teams when they don’t take them seriously. Winning their first-ever PSL crown last year, the Blaze Spikers now set their sights on notching their first All-Filipino Conference championship.
To fill the needs of an already-stacked roster for the upcoming season, Petron perhaps got a major steal as they landed, last season’s Best Middle Blocker, Aby Maraño from the now defunct Generika Lifesavers. In addition, the Blaze Spikers also snagged another set of promising skippers by drafting the likes of North Carolina alum Alexa Micek and National University setter Ivy Perez. Lastly, completing their 2015 signings is former FEU superstar Rachel Anne Daquis.
“Another challenge naman ang [All-Filipino] Conference for us,” Petron head coach George Pascua told Tiebreaker Times. “Malaking bagay din sina Aby kasi like last season, mahina ang bench namin. Ang leadership din ni Aby at experience sa laro napalaking tulong.”
When asked about the role of first round pick Micek is going to have on Petron, Pascua said, “Si Alexa gagawin ko siyang defensive at opposite, so bale dalawa ang magiging position niya. Ang experience din niya sa States malaking bagay [para sa team].”
To open their PSL campaign, Petron shall face the Philips Gold Lady Slammers this Saturday, 4:30 pm, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
