Perlas, UST make it to semis

Charo Soriano and Bea Tan played their usual best in a 21-16, 22-20 win over Jennymar Senares and Jennifer Cosas of Bacolod, to claim the remaining women’s semifinals berth Tuesday in the Beach Volleyball Republic On Tour Tuesday at the Rizal Boulevard sand court in Dumaguete City.

It was Perlas’ third straight victory in tough Group B after opening their campaign with a straight set loss to Babylove Barbon and Genesa Eslapor.

University of Santo Tomas, Perlas, and Bacolod actually had similar 3-1 slots, but Senares and Cosas – who stunned Barbon and Eslapor in three sets on Monday night – failed to make it to the next round by virtue of inferior quotient.

Barbon and Eslapor clinched the top ranking, while Soriano and Tan settled for second in the group in the ninth leg of the tour.

Samaa Miyagawa of Japan and Tin Lai of Hong Kong completed a four-match sweep of Group B following a 21-15, 21-18 conquest of Erjane Magdato and Alexa Polidario of UNO-R, who settled for second place in their pool at 3-1.

PAF outlasted UST, 21-17, 16-21, 16-14, in their final men’s match to top Group A. Both teams ended up tied at 3-1, but Jessie Lopez and Ranran Abdilla took the No. 1 ranking over Efraim Dimaculangan and Rancel Vergara, who settled for second place in the bracket.

Mitabashi Masato and Takashi Tsuchiya of Japan topped Group A with a 4-0 record, while KR Guzman and Krung Arbasto of Tiger Wings placed second with a 3-1 card.
