PCU-D surges past UB, CEU edges Diliman in crucial UCAL showdowns

Philippine Christian University-Dasmariñas strengthened its bid for a semifinal berth with an 80-67 victory over University of Batangas in the UCAL-PGFlex Linoleum 7th Season, Thursday at the Paco Arena in Manila.

Joshua Dino delivered an impressive all-around performance, tallying 15 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists as the Dolphins surged in the second half, outscoring the skidding Brahmans 34-24.

The win marked PCU’s second victory in the second phase of the eliminations, improving their overall record to 8-4.

The victory propelled PCU to solo third place behind co-leaders Immaculada Concepcion College and Olivarez College, both holding identical 8-3 records, with three playing dates remaining in the elimination round.

Meanwhile, defending champion Centro Escolar University kept its semifinal hopes alive with a hard-fought 52-42 victory over bitter rival Diliman College.

In a low-scoring affair, the Scorpions were limited to just two points in the third quarter but managed to rally and extend their winning streak to three games, improving their record to 7-5 — the same standing as Diliman College.

The Dolphins also drew solid contributions from John Madrono, who registered a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Ram Mesqueriola, who chipped in 12 points and 10 boards.

PCU must now overcome Manila Central University on Monday to secure at least a playoff for one of the semifinal spots, with seven teams still in contention.

The Scorpions also face a must-win situation against the ICC Bluehawks on Monday to stay in the playoff hunt.

Despite committing 25 turnovers, PCU dominated the boards with a commanding 63-39 advantage, resulting in 20 second-chance points and 18 fast-break points that proved decisive.
