PCCL founder Rey Gamboa, 81, passes away


Reynaldo D. Gamboa, born on January 15, 1942, peacefully passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023, at the age of 81.

A dedicated businessman, Gamboa left an indelible mark on Philippine basketball throughout the 1990s and beyond.

He notably served as the team governor for the now-defunct PBA franchise, Shell, and during the 1999 season, he assumed the role of league chairman within the Philippine Basketball Association.

Beyond his business endeavors, Gamboa’s heart beat for basketball. A proud alumnus of San Sebastian College-Recoletos, he also excelled as a business analyst, hosting a segment in IBC’s nightly news program during the 2000s.

Simultaneously, his writing graced the pages of the Philippine Star.

In 2002, he played an instrumental role in the founding of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL), a visionary initiative aimed at uniting the diverse collegiate leagues across the nation to determine the one true national champion.

His commitment to the PCCL was unwavering, and he served as its chairman until the end of his life.

Gamboa’s legacy in Philippine basketball remains a testament to his unwavering passion, dedication, and his vision for a more united and stronger basketball community. He will be remembered with respect and gratitude for the profound impact he had on the sport he loved.
