Jayson Castro reprised his role as TNT’s closer to help his side weather the sweep-seeking Converge, 98-91, to extend their winning streak to three in the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup, Sunday night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
The 38-year-old finished with 14 points, none more important than the back-breaking trifecta he buried with 1:09 left to stretch their lead to 96-91 after the FiberXers got to within just two from a deficit as big as 21.
Calvin Oftana would help out in shutting the door on the opposition with a tip-in in the final seconds as the Tropang Giga went on to gain a share of the Group A lead with Meralco as both the MVP Group teams tote identical 5-1 records.
The poise shown by TNT was also proof of how much the team has learned from its previous encounter with Converge, where it fell to a 96-95 decision no thanks to a game-winning four-pointer by Scotty Hopson.
