PBA Govs’ Cup Finals Game 4 resets sports attendance record in pandemic

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) shattered its own gate attendance record amidst the coronavirus pandemic in just a span of four nights.

Game Four of the Governors’ Cup Finals between Meralco and GInebra at the SMART Araneta Coliseum Wednesday drew 17,298 fans, the league said.

That, after welcoming a crowd of 16,104 for Game Three last Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena, which saw the Bolts take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 affair.

The 17,000-plus is easily the biggest audience drawn by any local sports league, whether pro or amateur, in the time of COVID-19.

League stats chief Fidel Mangonon III said that it is also the most for a PBA Wednesday playdate in three years, or since the 20,490 that watched Ginebra clinch the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup title versus San Miguel at the MoA Arena.

Fans started to enter the Big Dome about two hours prior to the match, which opened with the coronation of Gin Kings Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee as the Best Player of the Conference and Best Import, respectively.

All PBA games stream live on GigaPlay. Download it now on Android or IOS.

The Finals are also livestreamed on SMART Sports.
