PBA 3×3: Rono leads Pioneer to Pool A sweep — inc stunner over TNT

Pioneer Pro Tibay was the surprise leader of Pool A, clinching its ticket to the next round of the 2022 PBA 3×3 tournament’s second leg, Saturday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

The duo of Robin Rono and Gian Abrigo was a menace to open the day, leading Pioneer to a 19-14 win over Sista and a 21-15 triumph over Master Sardines.

In its third game, Rono — a product of National University — caught fire, dropping nine points in a 21-13 stunner over first leg champ TNT.

Pioneer completed its sweep with a hard-earned 21-17 win over San Miguel that saw the guest team weather Ken Bono’s nine points.

All in all, Abrigo had 27 points for the day while Rono added 26.

TNT, meanwhile, is second in Pool A with a 2-1 slate after beating San Miguel and Sista earlier in the day, 21-20 and 21-17, respectively.

Almond Vosotros had 22 points in three games played.

Both Sista and San Miguel are 1-2 in the standings and will break their deadlock tomorrow. Master Sardines went winless with a 0-3 slate.

The latter then fired a leg-high 12 points to lift Meralco past Platinum, 21-16. The returning Chris De Chavez also had 12 points in the contest.

Both Platinum and Purefoods own identical 1-1 slates in the group with the former beating the Giants, 21-16, in their clash. De Chavez got nine points in that game while Matt Salem and Yutien Andrada tallied five markers each.

Finally in Pool C, an inspire Limitless team showed their grit with a 2-0 sweep of their assignments.

Coming off a 21-17 loss to Ginebra in the third place game two weeks ago, the App Masters got back at them with a 20-17 triumph to open their day. Raymar Caduyac and Jorey Napoles had eight and six points, respectively in the game.

Limitless then scored its second win after a 21-15 triumph over CAVITEX. The trio of Brandon Rosser (eight points), Napoles (six), and Caduyac (five) did the damage for Phoenix Super LPG’s 3×3 squad.

Ginebra and Northport both hold 1-1 records with the Barangay holding the tiebreaker advantage over the Batang Pier after an 18-16 triumph. Northport’s sole win of the day came after a 21-16 victory over CAVITEX.
