University of the Philippines Lady Maroons notched their second straight win in the quarterfinals as they ended their campaign in a bright note with a 25-19, 25-10,25-18 decision against the De La Salle University-Dasmarinas Lady Patriots in the Shakeys V-League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena, Sunday afternoon.
Both teams played a tight first set in the early goings, with the Lady Patriots leading at 15-13. Guest player Sheena Chopitea, Diana Carlos and Justine Dorog then collaborated to give the Lady Maroons a 16-15 lead in the second technical timeout. Afterwards, Isa Molde went on an attacking spree to lift the Diliman based team. Molde then unleashed a down the line attack to end the set.
In the following set, the University of the Philippines continued their barrage, overwhelming De La Salle Dasmarinas with a multitude of attacks led by Carlos to take a two to none advantage.
The third set featured both teams exchanging attacks and errors against each other, with scores tied at 15, Molde scored two straight points to give the Lady Maroons a little seperations at 17-15. The Lady Patriots behind Iumi Yongco and Eunice Castillo attempted to give De La Salle Dasmarinas a an opportunity to extend the match, but Dorog scored six of the the Lady Maroons seven points, highlighted by four service aces to completely bury the Lady Patriots.
After the game UP Lady Maroons Head Coach Jerry Yee mentioned how satisfied he was with the team’s campaign this conference as it was used to give exposure to his rookies.
“We are after experience kasi puro bata, hindi pa sila sanay sa aircon na venue, camera at lights unlike noong High School pero nakuha ko naman ang gusto ko para sa kanila,” Yee said.
Yee is also happy with his rookies’ performances, but hopes they bring it to the upcoming UAAP volleyball season, adding that there are still things the team needs to improve on.
“May laro na sila(rookies), basta mailabas nila during the season(UAAP season). Madami pa dapat improved sa basic skills like blocking pati defense and offense’,’ Yee added.
Molde top scored the Lady Maroons with 19 points while Dorog chipped 14 points including seven service aces.
Cherry Rose Nunag finished with eight points with Yongco and Castillo contributed six points apiece for the Lady Maroons.
The Lady Maroons wrap up their quarterfinals campaign with two wins and five losses while the Lady Patriots ended with one win against six losses.
