Defending three-time champion National University and University of Santo Tomas ran roughshod over their two opponents for an early share of the lead in Day One of the UAAP Season 82 Women’s Taekwondo Championships, Tuesday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
The Lady Bulldogs made quick work of University of the East and Ateneo, emerging undefeated in the 14 individual matches. They now hold a 2-0 win-loss record after the opener.
Leading the charge for NU was team captain Irish Razon, who carved contrasting wins for her team. She survived Winslet Rosel of Ateneo at 18-16, before blanking UE’s Donna Duque at 11-0.
“Nag-prepare na po kami talaga ng sobra. Lalo na po ilan po kaming ga-graduate. Sabi namin, ‘Last na ‘to, dapat i-claim na natin ‘to,” Razon shared.
Reigning featherweight gold medalist Beatrice Gaerlan of University of the Philippines first averted a shutout. Realis Tabiando then sent University of Santo Tomas to the overall win in the lightweight class. The Lady Jins from España eventually finished the contest with a 6-1 line.
Earlier, the Lady Tiger Jins also quashed Ateneo, 7-0, to end the day at a perfect 2-0 record as well.
UP and De La Salle University also posted wins for identical 1-1 win-loss records and a tie for third.
The Lady Maroons dominated the Lady Green Jins , 5-2, before the latter bounced back with a 6-1 romp of UE.
The other match saw Far Eastern University winning against the Lady Red Warriors, 5-2.
